Scrimshire – The Hollow | Sophie Pettifor

Excellent brand new album, The Hollow, Out Now.

Director of wildly independent record label, Wah Wah 45s’ Adam Scrimshire released his second album, The Hollow on the November 21.

The man can boast not only of running this excelling label, but also of his own talents as singer- songwriter, DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist. Sounds like a bit of a hero.

The Hollow is said to be “A journey back to some of the major influences that got me into music, an exploration of those sounds, and accompanied by videos that explore some of the places that remind me of that period of my life.”

The album begins with beautiful plucking of guitars, soon followed by the flood of synths to which jazzy piano and drums are added. The man himself sings, whose vocals are husky yet clear and reassuringly masculine. The album is said to have influences of Jazz, Soul, Funk , Folk, Latin and even some Electronic. These influences are clear from the onset, and the Latin flavours are carried through with Everything You Say, which features vocals from Cinematic Orchestra’s Heidi Vogel.

Inga-Lill Aker sings on Ode To Daddy and Wah Wah 45s’ own Stac features on Alignment and Through A Window (with Scrimshire), the songs blending Soul and Jazz with Electronic in the way that suits Stac’s strong yet sweet vocals that is apparent in previous songs she sings. Faye Houston, another from the Wah Wah 45s family features on the Afrobeat track, Home. The album is fun and upbeat, but not without its Chillout tracks, and full of copious amounts of talent. The last track, The Hollow is a beautiful ending to such a diverse album; the heavenly harp is lulling and plays as a perfect resolution.

Online there is an interactive guide to the album which lets you listen to the tracks whilst reading about their influences, making it particularly special as it is so personal. Go check it out for something wonderfully different.
